Excerpt: Architects: Ludwig Bohnstedt, Roman Weigelt The Monument to Nicholas I (Russian: ) is a bronze equestrian monument of Nicholas I of Russia on St Isaac’s Square (in front of Saint Isaac’s Cathedral) in Saint Petersburg, Russia. Unveiled on July, 7th 1859, the statue was a technical wonder of its time; it spans six meters and was the first equestrian statue in the world with merely two support points (the rear hoofs of the horse). The Neo-Baroque monument to the Russian ruler Nicholas I was designed by the French-born architect Auguste de Montferrand in 1856. HUI When he planned registration Saint Isaac’s Square, have already been finished uniform architectural ensembles of Palace Square (in 1843) and Senate Square (in 1849). Monuments to emperors Peter I and Alexander I were a dominant of these squares. By tradition, de Montferrand also was going to construct on the new area a monument, this monument should unite the buildings of different architectural styles leaving on the area. Kind on Saint Isaac’s Square with Saint Isaac’s Cathedral. In the centre is Monument to Nicholas IAt the personal request of his successor Alexander II, Nicholas was represented as a prancing knight, “in the military outfit in which the late tsar was most majestic”. Around the base are allegorical statues modelled on Nicholas I’s daughters and personifying virtues. The statue faces Saint Isaac’s Cathedral, with the horse’s posterior turned to the Mariinsky Palace of Nicholas’s daughter, Grand Duchess Maria Nikolayevna of Russia. This was said to have caused the Grand Duchess considerable discomfort. The monument to Nicholas I depicts a determined absolutist Russian ruler as a powerful military figure. However, being a junior army officer at heart, Nicholas I was esp… More: |

A Labor of Love: The Life & Art of Vinnie Ream $124.76 VINNIE REAM was a government postal worker and a teenage art prodigy who studied at the U.S. Capitol during the Civil War. She was able to model Abraham Lincoln prior to his assassination in 1865. In 1866, Congress wanted a statue of Lincoln and voted to give the young woman a chance to make the work. Vinnie became the first woman and the youngest artist to receive a U.S. Government commission for a statue. Her tragic true-to-life marble figure of Lincoln in the U.S. Capitol rotunda was unveiled in 1871. The work and its artist generated a storm of controversy. Vinnie Ream overcame a campaign of slander and courageously completed the statue despite many obstacles. This book is the true story of that dramatic struggle. It is an attempt to document the life and work of a famous, but forgotten, American woman sculptor. The information it contains came from hundreds of sources and is the end result of many years of study. The book shows the known art of Vinnie Ream in pictures and presents an inventory of her work for the first time. One purpose of this is to challenge the assumption that she was only an artist of secondary importance . It is our hope that her true role in art history can be better determined by this detailed survey.Another purpose of this volume is to tell an accurate version of Vinnie Ream’s life story. It attempts to transcend both the Cinderella and notorious elements written in the past by giving more original and more balanced information. Uncut speeches, debates, news stories and letters have been included where possible to let the characters speak for themselves. It is our hope that this book will stimulate more in-depth study of neglected artists and helpto hoist them out of the abyss of historical obscurity. |

Excerpt: Cape Sounion (Modern Greek: A – Akrotírio Soúnio; Ancient Greek: – kron Soúnion; Latin: Sunium promonturium; Venetian: Capo Colonne – “Cape of Columns”) is a promontory located 69 km (43 mi, by road) SSE of Athens, at the southernmost tip of the Attica peninsula in Greece. Cape Sounion is noted as the site of ruins of an ancient Greek temple of Poseidon, the god of the sea in classical mythology. The remains are perched on the headland, surrounded on three sides by the sea. The ruins bear the deeply engraved name of English Romantic poet Lord Byron (1788 – 1824). The site is a popular day-excursion for tourists from Athens, with sunset over the Aegean Sea, as viewed from the ruins, a sought-after spectacle. Theseus slays the Minotaur. Found in shipwreck off Cape Artemisium. Athens National Archaeological MuseumAccording to legend, Cape Sounion is the spot where Aegeus, king of Athens, leapt to his death off the cliff, thus giving his name to the Aegean Sea. The story goes that Aegeus, anxiously looking out from Sounion, despaired when he saw a black sail on his son Theseus ‘s ship, returning from Crete. This led him to believe that his son had been killed in his contest with the dreaded Minotaur, a monster that was half man and half bull. The Minotaur was confined by its owner, King Minos of Crete, in a specially designed labyrinth. Every year, the Athenians were forced to send 7 boys and 7 girls to Minos as tribute. These youths were placed in the labyrinth to be devoured by the Minotaur. Theseus had volunteered to go with the third tribute and |

Perhaps we may look upon it as one of the most perfect of art-products. For every part relates itself to some emotion or utterance. Aphrodite: A Play $11.95 THE APHRODITE OF MELOS (VENUS DE MILO), THE LARGE MARBLE STATUE OF THE GODDESS OF LOVE, CARVED IN THE 1ST OR 2ND CENTURY B.C., NOW IN THE LOUVRE, HAS BEEN THE MOST FAMOUS WOMAN IN THE WORLD SINCE SHE WAS DUG UP IN GREECE IN 1820.Ben Hastings, an American art history professor, thinks she holds deep secrets that he can discover if he lives alone with a full-sized copy of the statue. But three women won’t let him alone. Helen, his wife; Silvia, a curvaceous young blonde; and Xenia, a dark-haired woman with a mysterious past, try to divert him from his obsession with Aphrodite and possess him for themselves.Do they succeed? Or does the power of the goddess prevail? Ben considers her to be the essence of woman, but she is replete with contradictions: whore or nurturing mother; a fragmented figure that yet forms a magnificent work of art; an iconic female but carved by a man.Although fast-paced and comical in tone, the play investigates many of the issues pondered by the ancient Greeks: the ideal vs. the real; sacred vs. profane love; one vs. many (which is more fundamental?).Is woman forever to be a mystery? Is the truth knowable? Are there some things we should not know? Read the play and decide if Ben finds out what he is searching for. |

Athenian Myths and Festivals: Aglauros, Erechtheus, Plynteria, Panathenaia, Dionysia $150 Moving out from a particular problem about a particular Athenian festival, the late Christiane Sourvinou-Inwood investigates central questions concerning Athenian festivals and the myths that underlay them. She studies the role played at festivals by hereditary religious associations, showing how simple actions of undressing, veiling, bathing, and re-dressing a statue created a symbolic drama of abnormality, reversion to primeval time, and renewal for the Athenians. Sourvinou-Inwood also offers a reading of the ever controversial Parthenon frieze. Her book, brought to completion by Robert Parker, displays all the attention to detail and the concern for methodological rigour that have made her an iconic figure among students of Greek religion. |

Objects in perspective diminish; the railroad, far off, joins its parallel rails. How differently our imagination acts! The Trojan heroes are seven feet high, and Achilles, in his new armor and marvellous shield, stalks a giant. Charlemagne is revered as a statue in front of St. Peter’s, or as a flaming sword forcing Christianity upon the Druidical Saxons. Even Charles the Fifth, who said he would not war with Luther’s bones, stands a heroic-sized figure in this perspective of three hundred and fifty years, and we forget the cups of senna he took after each gluttonous feast. Homer makes Ithaca shaded with groves and musical with purling brooks, but the vision flies and we see rock- covered heights and treeless slopes. We picture to ourselves impetuous streams near Sparta, Athens, and Argos, that bore along the themes of Homer’s song, but they are dried into quiet brooks, not wide enough to balk a nimble boy or the pet dog of the tourist. These Greeks had their fir, poplar, and oak; they had their chill winters when snow lay heavy on their hills and weighted the fir-branches with a load all dazzling white. Deep into their shores ran bays, like Fundy and Chaleur, but stony and unlovely for cultivation were the slopes and uplands, except here and there where olive-trees yielded their fruit. The Greek struggle for existence was like that of the Netherlands in the fourteenth century, man trying to draw nourishment from sea and land; Nature trying to win back from man her dominion over shore and fields. This struggle, this labor of the ” curly-headed ” Greek, taught him fear of the elements on sea and land; he peopled all places with gods. From fear he learned to know and eventually to love the ” mountains that look on Marathon,” the pass of Daphne, the |

The interior is plain, simple, heavy in construction; and as is usual in the Gothicforms of the South, devoid of architectural elegance. It relies for its undoubted effect and power on qualities far removed from artifice,—on impressive loneliness, on height that is sheer, on its darkness, and on the sobriety of its polychrome. Peering in the dimness at modern Stations of the Cross that have unusually true religious feeling, after a glance at a realistic painting of naked souls agonising in reddest flames of Purgatory, after a few long minutes before the white figure of Ribera’s Crucified Christ, so tragic in its gloomy Spanish background, one goes outside; and before the door has swung back again, the traveller sees the sturdy outer walls of the old Cathedral, warm and ruddy in the southern sun. The one entrance to the church is through a small insignificant portal on the south side. The south wall itself is too old and irregular for either effect or beauty, and its most curious part is a little tower in whose topmost part a jack o’ the clock has stood since the XVI century and struck, more or less faithfully, the passing of the hours. Near the portal is another bit of religious art more interesting than beautiful, a modern statue of Mary Immaculate “who miraculously saved us from the plague—in the XIV centuryt and, two hundred years later, from the religionists.” Erected after a mission under the fostering care of the Dominican Fathers, it is not only a tribute to their heavenly |
