Why are some commercial pilots required to wear a wrist watch?
I read in a book some commercial airline pilots are required to wear a wrist watch while in flight. I’m guessing it might be to calculate fuel consumption in case instruments in the cockpit fail? I mean it seems easy to just put a clock in the cockpit?
Any other ideas?
There are a number of reasons – they may all seem silly in a cockpit with computer screens and GPS, but if the crap hits the fan and even the clock on the dash fails…..
Many IFR procedures are based on time – holding patterns and procedure turns are based on timing a standard rate turn.
On many non precision approaches, the missed approach point is determined by the elapsed time since passing the final approach fix.
In a non-radar environment, position reports must include the time and an ETA for the next reporting point.
